Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support for Experienced Providers Course

(Part II - ACLS for Experienced Providers Course)

Aims and Objectives:
The knowledge and skills obtained on the Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support for Experienced Providers Course include:

  • Adjuncts for oxygenation, ventilation and airway control
  • Management of the difficult airway
  • Devices to assist circulation
  • Emergency cardiovascular pharmacology
  • Peri-arrest arrhythmias and their management
  • Life-threatening causes of chest pain
  • Advanced acute coronary syndromes
  • Life-threatening electrolyte and acid-base abnormalities
  • Toxicology in emergency care
  • Hypothermia and submersion
  • Severe asthma and anaphylaxis
  • Cardiac arrest associated with pregnancy
  • Shock, pulmonary oedema and hypotension
  • Trauma, electrocution and lightning strike
  • Medico-legal aspects of advanced life support
  • Ethical considerations in emergency cardiovascular care
  • Post resuscitation care
  • Team leadership, team dynamics and resuscitation team co-ordination


Target Audience:

Any healthcare worker who has Current registration as a Medical or Dental practitioner, Intern, Junior Intern, Professional Nurse or Paramedic and holds a current American Heart Association ACLS provider certification.
    
Course duration:
2 days of interactive discussion, video instruction, practical skills instruction, hands on skills sessions and case based scenario simulation training.

Pre course preparation:
A comprehensive ACLS Resource Textbook is supplied for self study prior to ACLS-EP Course participation.

Assessment &course evaluation:
Candidates are expected to pass a Pre-Entry MCQ test Based on the ACLS Resource Textbook [required passmark = 84%].They must also pass a practical evaluation as team leader during the management of a peri-arrest patient.

Course certification
Each candidate will receive an American Heart Association ACLS-EP course completion Card upon successful completion of the Course.

CPD accreditation
Accredited by the Health Professions Council of SA for 32 Continuing Education units (including medical ethics).
